St Gregorios of Parumala
Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, is the first declared Saint of the Malankara Indian Orthodox Church. He is also known as Parumala Kochu Thirumeni.
Thirumeni was born on June 15, 1848, to Mathai Geevarghese and Mariam Geevarghese, of Pallathattu family in the Chathuruthy house, Mullanthuruthy. The couple had three sons and two daughters – Kurian, Eli, Mariam ,Varkey and Geevarghese. Geevarghese was the youngest, he was also fondly called Kochaippora and was given the baptismal name – Geevarghese. His paternal uncle – Malpan Geevarghese , taught him Syriac language. The Malankara Metropolitan Mathews Mar Athanasius ordained him as a Quroyo (sub-deacon), at the age of 10. At the age of 18, he was ordained Shamshono by His Grace Yuyakim Mor Kurillos, Soon after Geevarghese was ordained Kassisso and later as Cor-episcopa, again at the blessed hands of His Grace Yuyakim Mor Kurillos Bava. Later he settled at the Vettikkal Dayro near Mulunthuruthy where he led a strict monastic life. Small pox was spreading at different parts of the country, and deacon was also contracted. He had a vision of St Mary , he saw her standing near, and assuring that he would be soon well, and he was well very soon. In 1872 he was ordained Ramban (Monk-Priest) by Pulikottil Mor Dionysius. In 1876, His Holiness Ignatius Peter III, the Patriarch ordained Ramban Geevarghese as Metropolitan by the name of “Gregorios” at the North Paravur St. Thomas Church. Thirumeni made the Jerusalem pilgrim at a time when the journey was very difficult, he took refuge in God, and completed his journey. He had foreknowledge of his death and told about it to those around him. On 02 Nov 1902 , Holy father breathed his last , and bells of Parumala Seminary sang the wailing tune and carried the message across River pampa to the people of the country. Thirumeni taught Prayer is the inspiration of childhood, the refuge of youth and peace during old age. May his intercession be a fortress for us all.
